A chess board has 64 squares (eight ranks and files) and two opposing colors, light and dark. The common colors are black and white. Therefore, although the colors are sometimes not black and white, for instance light and dark brown, they are still called as ‘black’ and ‘white’.

The materials of chess board are various from wood to fabric. Wooden chess board is usually used for upper level games while fabric board and card board are more used in informal game.
